Since March 2012, 40 drug samples examined at the Perth ChemCentre have contained dimethoxyphenyl - methoxyphenyl methyl – ethanamine, also known as NBOMe.

Police say the drug has been seen in several forms including tablets.

The drug is a potent substitute for LSD and police warned there have been a number of deaths associated with the compound that can cause pyschological effects as well as an increased heart rate and blood pressure.

A police spokesman said "There have been a number of publicised deaths associated with these compounds."

The drug has been seen as colourful paper squares, capsules, tablets and powders.
