“A friend and I had a bad reaction to a substance labelled ‘SK’ (S isomer ketamine). My tolerance built up quickly, and I needed more to feel anything. I took it too far and had pinprick eyes, foamy vomit and super shallow breathing.
We got a fentanyl testing strip, which tested positive. It’s a wake-up call. I’m ordering a reagent kit to see what else it might contain. I thought I was immune to buying dodgy substances from trusted persons. Turns out the ‘trusted person’ had no idea too!”
What are the risks?
- A single line of ‘ketamine’ powder containing opioids (such as fentanyl) can kill or cause: Dizziness, paleness, blurred vision, loss of consciousness, vomiting, difficulty breathing.
- Risk of overdose is much higher if you aren’t a regular opioid user.
- Risk of overdose increases drastically if you have been using other depressant drugs like alcohol, benzos, ketamine or GHB.
How to protect yourself?
- Don’t use alone. Use a Zoom buddy or have someone on the phone with you. Make sure your friends know what you thought you were taking, and that they are comfortable calling an ambulance.
- If you’re using a new batch, start out with a small dose and wait to see if it feels right.
- Opioid overdoses can be reversed by administering Naloxone, which is available free in NSW pharmacies and via NUAA’s NSP.

How to get help?
If you see the warning signs of unexpected drug reactions or overdose:
- Call Triple Zero (000)
- Administer naloxone if you have any. (Repeated doses may be needed)
- Start rescue breathing if someone is not breathing.
